Tips for Perfect, Polished Hooves

Want that smooth, glossy, show‑ring finish? These pro tips will help you get beautifully polished hooves every time.

Trim the coronet band hair A must‑do if you’re using hoof black on white feet. Trimming prevents the black from bleeding into the white hair.

Use sandpaper blocks A medium and fine sandpaper block will smooth the hoof “cuticle” (the waxy scurf at the top). They’re flexible and great for tidying chestnuts too.

Lightly sand the hoof surface This gives you an even base for hoof black. For natural (white or parti‑coloured) hooves, scrub and dry first so you can see where stains sit in the grooves.

Boot polish for extra smoothness After sanding, rub black or white boot polish over the hoof for a clean, even finish.

Toothpaste hack for white hooves White toothpaste works brilliantly for cleaning nail holes and toe clips on shod white feet. Quick, safe and brightening.

Prep at home for fidgety horses If your horse won’t stand still, prep hooves the night before when they’re relaxed. On show day, touch up on the float or ramp.

Use carpet squares Cheap, lightweight and perfect to stand the hoof on while painting.

Steel wool for touch‑ups Plain (unsoaped) steel wool buffs out streaks, removes dirt without washing and restores gloss between classes.

Hairspray—use with caution A common pro hack to stop gloss rubbing off, but hairspray is a solvent and can make hoof black run. Only use on fully dry polish and apply lightly.

For a natural look For natives or natural classes, clean white hooves as above, then use Glass Pro Coat Laminator instead of waxes or oils. It stops dirt sticking and wipes clean easily.

Important reminder If you use hoof black or resin‑type glosses, remove them after your show. A little non‑acetone nail polish remover works perfectly.
