Removing Yellow Stains from Manes and Tails

One of the questions we’re asked most often is how to get that stubborn yellow tinge out of a mane or tail. Just when you think the hair looks clean and white, the show photographer’s camera will reveal every hidden yellow hue. That’s where HSE HiTone Silver comes in. This little concentrate is designed to be quick, simple and effective on manes, tails, or even the whole body.

Quick Fixes for Tough Yellowing

Use hot water for stubborn brassiness Soaking the hair in your HiTone Silver mix with hot water helps the toner work more deeply.

Use distilled or drinking water if you’re on dam/bore water Minerals and metals in rainwater, dam water and bore water can bond to the hair when mixed with shampoo, making toning harder. Clean water gives you a cleaner result.

Try the “shock method” for coarse or porous hair After shampooing or stain‑removing, let the tail dry completely. Then apply a HiTone Silver soak to the dry hair. This method is extremely effective for thick, stubborn hair types.

Follow with Liquid Silk Hair Polish & Detangler Apply immediately after treatment and use regularly to reduce future staining. HSE Liquid Silk allows the hair to breathe while blocking contaminants like clay, manure and urine that cause yellowing.

Use a breathable tail bag Keep the tail wrapped to prevent new stains, but choose breathable cotton or cotton‑blend bags. Heavy synthetic bags can trap moisture or even suffocate the hair.

Bonus Tip

HiTone Silver isn’t just for manes and tails. It can also be used as an all‑over optical brightener. A light rinse over a dappled grey makes the dapples stand out beautifully, and it leaves whites and patches sparkling.
