Understanding Rubbed Manes and Tails — and How to Help Them Regrow
Rubbed manes and tails can happen for many reasons: overheating from rugs, high‑protein diets, insect bites or sensitivities, worms, irritated skin on the dock or mane bed — or simply because your horse knows you’ve just paid your show entries. To get the best results from HSE HG Serum (or any regrowth treatment), the first priority is always remove the cause.
Common Causes to Check
Rugs Combo rugs are a frequent culprit. Choose a safe, well‑fitting neck rug and stick to one rug rather than layering multiple. Overheating is a major cause of rubbing.
Rubbing spots in the paddock Block access to favourite scratching posts or rough surfaces.
Worming Keep worming routines up to date, especially for pinworms, which commonly cause tail rubbing.
Insects If unrugged, protect your horse with light, breathable rugs to reduce insect irritation.
Diet Check that feed rations are balanced. Excess dietary “heat” often shows up in hooves and crests.
Environment Inspect stables and paddocks for irritating plants, weeds, or chemical residues that may be causing itching.
Using HG Serum for Regrowth
Apply just a couple of drops — no more than you’d use to moisturise your own face. Separate the hair (if any remains) and apply the serum directly to the skin. Massage it in like a skin cream. Hair grows from the skin, so the serum needs to reach the follicle.
HG’s ingredients soothe irritation and encourage the follicle to release natural sebum, helping flush and protect the skin with its own waxes.
Ongoing Care During Treatment
- Wash the affected area only once a week using diluted shampoo.
- If you suspect infection, rinse thoroughly with an antibacterial wash such as Chlorhexidine or Betadine.
- Reapply HG Serum and continue the routine until strong, healthy regrowth appears.
